Intellectual Property (IP) results from the expression of an idea. It can be a brand, a process, an invention, a design, a song or another intellectual creation. IP can be owned, bought and sold. But how can that affect your company?

 

It's important to ensure your IP is delivering the best value possible to your company whilst also protecting your assets. This event introduces Intellectual Property and covers a range of issues surrounding IP.

Speaker Information

 

Gary Townley (Business Events Manager, Intellectual Property Office)

Gary is the Business Events Manager in the Business Outreach and Education department of the Intellectual Property Office. He has worked in various departments within the IPO and has completed diplomas for both Law and Intellectual Property. Gary is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and regularly delivers presentations to busiensses, schools and universities on all aspects of patents, trade marks, registered designs and copyright.

 

Dr. Gavin Smith (Intellectual Property Development Manager, Lancaster University)

Dr. Gavin Smith manages the protection of Intellectual Property created at Lancaster University (mainly patents and trademarks) and licenses it to external organisations and spinout companies - contributing to research income and the generation of 'impact'. His undergraduate study and PhD research were undertaken at Cambridge University. He worked in high-growth exporting SMEs for almost 20 years before moving to Lancaster. He has founded and run his own company and is a Chartered Engineer.

 

Benjamin Dredge (Commercial IP Solicitor, Napthens LLP)

Benjamin Dredge qualified as a corporate solicitor into a department that deals with all aspects of corporate and commercial work. He has both the expertise and a keen interest in all aspects surrounding Intellectual Property law, including methods of protecting and exploiting copyright, patents, trademarks, confidential information as well as dealing with issues surrounding branding, product development and licensing agreements. He has now begun to focus on building a client base of IP centric companies and businesses, bringing together his commercial expertise, as well as his technical skills in relation to Intellectual Property law.

 

Ken Garner (Director of Business Development, Styskin's Solutions)

Ken has an extensive background in the software sector. He has held various international sales and marketing positions, including European Sales and Marketing Manager for the LanDesk devision of Intel, and similar EMEA marketing roles at Progress Software Inc, Accent Software International Inc, the ScanSoft division of Xerox Inc and Nuance Software Inc. Ken joined Styksin's Solutions in 2009. Styskin's was founded by 2 Cambridge cyber security graduates to commercialise their ideas for 'frictionless encryption'. SafeTok is the first of a number of products which are being developed by the founders to meet the growing IP and data security needs of SMEs.

 

Damian Croker (Brandstrike)

Before becoming CEO of Brandstrike in 2011, he has been Director of Brand Protection Services at Brandstrike since 2009. Damian has led Brandstrike's rapid growth and overseen the development of the company's Associate Law Firm network into the most extensive of any legal services firm in the world with coverage of 240 countries/territories. He compiled the Guide to Trademark Registration in European Dependent Territories, which is used by hundreds of law firms and brands around the world. He is a regular speakers at Intellectual Property events and manages Brandstrike's LinedIn Group OBSCURE IP. Damian holds a General Certificate in Intellectual Property from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Academy and a Graduate Diploma in International Trade from the Institure of Export.

 

Paul Hughes (Companies House)

Paul Hughes has worked in Companies House for 25 years. During that time he has worked in various sections around the organisation. His current role is in the events team where he has worked for the past 7 years. Paul regularly speaks at business exhibitions and Companies House run seminars. He has a wealth of knowledge and is up to date on the latest Companies Act changes.
